The melody of the flute is the signal for Radha to slip out of her home into the darkness of the night and meet with Krishna quietly. Radha is a brave woman. Her family often wondered why she slips out into the deep forest at night. This happens every day. Does Radha have an affair? Does she have a secret lover? Is she committing adultery?
On that day after sunset, Radha’s family quietly followed her without being noticed. Krishna knew what was in the air. He instructed Radha to collect some wildflowers and fruits and sit quietly in front of him with her eyes closed. When her family arrived, Krishna appeared to them as Goddess Kali. Krishna’s appearance was fierce and terrifying with red eyes, blue skin and hanging tongue. Krishna is Krishna Kali. He is not different from Kali. On seeing Kali, Radha’s family quietly returned home. They decided to leave Radha alone and not to interfere with her again.
The spiritual path is often fought with hindrances. Hindrances stem from both the individual’s mind and external pressures from worldly life. Spiritual path is only for the brave. One can draw lessons from Radha’s life. The first is about her bravery. The second is about finding every opportunity to slip into quietude from the transactional world. The third is about a profound, intense, and persistent longing. If we take care of these three, the divine will take care of the rest. It is a matter of time before the hinderances slip away. The melody of divinity is all around us. We must sharpen our ears to hear it.
Krishna is the divine cowherd surrounded by cows. In Vrindavan, the cows graze in a pasture with abundant, long grass touching their knees. The ears of the bulls are ever searching and waiting in anticipation for the music emanating from Krishna’s flute. When they sense the arrival of Krishna, they forget to graze and turn towards his direction. The cows excited by the arrival of Krishna, involuntarily drain the milk from their udders in excitement. The calves upon seeing their mothers, rush towards their udders to feed on the milk. However, when they sense the condition of their mothers, they too are frozen in excitement. The milk drains out of their open mouths onto the ground. They too sense Krishna. This is how one should search for divinity in their lives.
Radha embraced Krishna to seek the truth. By embracing divinity, we too can engage with the truth. This is the purpose of spiritual path. The divine is eagerly waiting to have an affair with us.
